Lanyard
Information About Lanyards
The lanyard
is most popular way of hanging a security pass, ID badge, mobile
phone, memory chip, MP3 player, ipod or even your keys. Although
used in every day life few people really know the history and
original use of the lanyard - was originally used by the armed
forces and militia.
In the Navy The Fleet used the lanyard
as a piece of rigging to secure objects or attached to a hook
that was used to fire canons. Not to be out done the Army, in
particular the Dragoons would use lanyards to secure their sabres
to their wrists. By doing this it elimanted the chance of dropping
the sabre when charging.
The infantry also used the lanyard as a semi permanent way
of attaching their pistols to their uniforms. By a skilled user
this lanyard could be detached and re-attached quickly when needed,
but as a norm stayed attached to the uniform and weapon whilst
housed in the holster. Flintlock rilfles and pistols also used
the lanyard in their respective firing mechanisms, making them
a must have item even then.
Today you can still see the lanyard being used by the military
on a daily basis as lanyards of various colours, braids and designs
are worn to distinguish rank and achievements.
